Dear Internet,

We’ve been hard at work on an app that we’ve called Poems by Heart. It’s a fun memorization game that will challenge you with classic poems from the greats: Shakespeare, Poe, Dickinson, Whitman, Keats, Carroll…. You’ll rank, you’ll improve, and you can share your newly perfected recitations online with friends. Oh, and it’s free to download.

Happy Poetry Month!

Love,
Penguin Classics

P.S. Jen Wang, the wonderful illustrator for the app, talks about the process of creating all the art on a blog post here!

English degrees are for thinking.

English degrees are for thinking.:

My boy, Penn State Prof. Michael Bérubé, always says the right things.

One of my favorite projects!
Of Mice and Men turned 75 this past year and remains one of the most powerful statements John Steinbeck ever wrote about life, death, faith, fidelity, and that lambent, mercurial thing we’re “all the time talkin’ about”—The American Dream.

We’re proud today finally to offer the new Of Mice and Men: Teacher’s Deluxe Edition, which comes full with expanded materials, including classroom discussion questions and twelve exclusive videos of students thinking through the novel’s themes (one of which you can watch right here).

I found this little guy in the pumpkin patch at the Queens County Farm Museum. All those pumpkins gave me a great idea for a portrait. I thought it was a great idea. His mom thought it was a great idea. His dad thought it was a great idea. Only one person didn’t like the idea.

I understand this child’s anguish, as it is the same feeling I had when my friends left me wandering about the wrong pumpkin patch this weekend at the very same Queens County Farm Museum.

Meet Penguin Drop Caps, a new series of twenty-six collectible hardcover editions, featuring a specially commissioned illustrated letter of the alphabet by type designer Jessica Hische and a series design collaboration between Hische and Penguin Art Director Paul Buckley.

Writes Elda Rotor, Associate Publisher and Editorial Director of Penguin Classics:

Penguin Drop Caps is a series inspired by typography—its beauty and its power of expression. A drop cap, or an initial cap, is the first letter of a word when designed and set larger than the surrounding text. It is used to introduce a new idea, paragraph, or chapter. We may recognize such elements from books of our childhood, from sacred and historic texts, and from beautiful early editions of classic literature. Whether they appear in illuminated fifteenth-century manuscripts set by scribes or digitally displayed on Jessica Hische’s own Daily Drop Cap blog, a drop cap letter impresses upon the reader the arrival of something of which to take note, something unique and special that deserves to be savored.

For the book lover, the series is a nod to the tradition of printing and the distribution of ideas, stories, and opinions—ranging from paper to digital media. For the writer and artist, the series pays homage to the significance of composition, texture, and form. With Penguin Drop Caps, we are inspired by the timeless tradition and craft of letters and their endless capacity to communicate.

As you can see above, the series debuts this fall with:

A for Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice
B for Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre
C for Willa Cather’s My Ántonia
D for Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations
E for George Eliot’s Middlemarch
F for Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (translation by Lydia Davis)
…with more to come!

A 1940s RCA Manual Teaches Male Bosses How to Supervise Ladies

The blog Retronaut has unearthed a booklet, created by RCA in the 1940s, intended to inform male bosses about the best ways to supervise their new employees as World War II brought females into factories, often for the first time. […]

What’s remarkable about this is that none of the qualities highlighted or advice dispelled in the booklet is actually specific to women. “Tell them what they’re supposed to do” and “tell them when they’ve done good work” and “make sure they know where the bathroom is” are not nuggets of wisdom that are in any way particular to women. They’re just, you know, what any boss should probably be doing for any employee.

Please refrain from both horseplay and kidding-in-quotation-marks when supervising me, boys. I mean it.
